Installations
The Swing is a proposed interactive site specific installation requiring a sofa. It is to be located in an outdoor space that includes a large oak tree with a strong horizontal branch. Suspended from this branch is a sofa with a French or Rococo design. It is lifted two to three feet off the ground. The chains which support the sofa are intertwined with ribbon. And swings gently with a push or with the breeze (the sofa is light) .
The swing is playful. It is a comfy seat swinging from the trees. It mirrors the mindset of a suicidal individual thinking of the comfort (release) death by hanging might bring. It is my hope that it voids that desire with a notion of a rest (comfort) in a welcoming piece of furniture.
The attractiveness of the couch belies the attractiveness of this death option to suicidal persons. And yet, this swing hanging in a tree is not a tool of self destruction. It is tool for self care. It brings the suicidal individual out into the sun and posits them in a safe comfortable space.
